Detour a little West!

After leaving Richmond we headed to Columbia, SC to visit with Shannon and Shawn and to do a little shopping for Baby S! Yes Baby S is expected in August and we are just so excited for them! We felt that everyone was visiting Columbia that weekend as every where we went it was packed! So much traffic! Had a great dinner and then home for mama to rest. The next morning we went to breakfast and went looking for nursery furniture! A good friend Matt had told them where they had gotten theirs and off we went to find the store! It was one of those "AAAAHHHHH" moments when we walked in the door! Baby Heaven! They found a crib and dresser/changing station that will be just perfect! We then went to a new store, Buy Buy Baby, which is owned by Bed, Bath and Beyond. They have absolutely everything you could ever need! Poppie bought a stroller for them (he had wanted to buy one in Richmond) and we got some nice tiny sleepsacks, receiving blankets and other neutral items for Baby S! The next morning Shawn went and got Krispy Kreme for me! Love them! Then Shan and I went out to get her some maternity clothes. Such fun! On Sunday we had a nice cookout! Yes I said cookout and their friends came over and enjoyed a lot of laughs and good food. Monday the kids went to work and onward for us with our journey!

Traveling down 95!

After leaving 3 ft of snow in O'Burg on Feb 8th, we journeyed to Richmond, Va to visit with Andrew. Dick had not been down to see him since he had moved there so it was a great opportunity to do so! The extra bonus was having Robyn there visiting also. We had not seen her in over a year and had missed her. Andrew has become quite worldly and enjoys many different kinds of food from around the world! Many, well all, we have never tried! Our first meal was at a Cuban restaurant that was cozy and eclectic! Food was great! Walking also seems to be a big part of living in Richmond and I am pleased to say that my foot is so much better and I was able to keep up with all of them! The next day Andrew took us to see where he has his studio now. So many old factories being turned into new spaces! Then off to do a little shopping. Walked along a street with shop after shop after shop! Just amazing! Lunch was at a French cafe with amazing architecture! Food was awesome with Andrew ordering a cheese selection with I loved! Then to a wine store where we bought 4 bottles of wine for his birthday present! Wine has become a passion for him also! After a little rest we went to his apartment where he tried to get me to enjoy a red which I just can't seem to do! Sorry Andrew! At one point Robyn said "Want some Vodka?" Huh? And she had had only one glass and we had a good laugh! That evening we went to another French restaurant in the historical district and had another wonderful dinner! Now I have to say I didn't think I would like French food but it was definitely one of the best meals I have had in a long time! This was Andrew's 25th birthday. Cannot believe it! I am not getting old just my kids are! Next stop, Columbia, SC!

Dying Easter Eggs!

The girls loved dying eggs with Aunt Shan and Mommy! I think Jenna got more dye on her hands than on the eggs! Plus she dropped the most eggs on the floor! Thank goodness they were hard boiled! Makayla did her perfect ones and Lily did them all! Put them in the frig and the next morning they were missing! The easter bunny had taken them to the other unit and the tooth fairy had stopped to find Makayla's tooth she lost that day!

It all began as innocent conversation over Thanksgiving Vacation. Andrew's girlfriend Robyn mentioned that her family was going to WDW in March. I asked when and then we found out it would be during the time when Dick would be back in OBurg for Expo and I thought it would be great to meet them there. Her sister Biz is a senior this year and her marching band was traveling to perform at DisneyWorld. I left Daytona at 8 (should have been earlier) and made my way to Orlando. It was quite different driving into the parking area as we have not done that since we have bought into the Vacation Club. Then I had to get my ticket. No more going to the window, they now have kiosks to use your CC to get your ticket. Then boarded the Monorail by myself and got to the Magic Kingdom. Walking through those gates by myself without Dick, kids or grandchildren was quite surreal! Found Julie, Curt and Robyn right where we were supposed to meet and then started our day. The favorites Tiki Birds, Jungle Cruise, Country Bear Jamboree, Carousel of Progress and the Haunted Mansion were all wonderful.
Then we watched the band perform, they were great and proceeded to eat lunch at the Crystal Palace with the Characters from Winnie the Pooh!
We also took in the Monster,Inc! Laugh stage in which I saw the true Curt Hyzy! Before we went in he took off his Hawaiian shirt so "he wouldn't be singled out!" Oh no he still did! Dancing with all his might on screen and Julie and Robyn dying of embarrassment!
All in all we had a wonderful day! Thank you so much Hyzy family for inviting me!

A Summer of Growing Challenges

You might know that the one year that I wanted my gardens to be perfect for the wedding, it would be a year in the North Country of cool tempetures, too much rain and not much sunshine! It was a lot of work to get things looking the way I wanted but it did turn out pretty good! These pics were from the first week of August and at this time I had hired a talented lady to do the day to day watering, weeding and dead heading. What a godsend she was! Thanks Kathie!

Southern Ladies Shower the Bride!

On Sunday June 6th we had a shower at the Springdale House and Gardens a
wonderful place for a party!
Shannon's bridesmaids and friends were in charge of the decorating
and games! Kelsey Geary drove in from Charlotte and her college friend Julie Becraft
from Atlanta also drove up! My friend (and Shannon's dance teacher!) Vicki Lewis
drove down from North Carolina. Bridesmaid Laruen Dumsky drove from Florida.
Bridesmaids Tara Connor, Katrina Smaciak, Amie Smaciak and flower girl Kayliegh Smaciak
and ring bearer Tyler Smaciak were all part of the festivities! Shawn's mom Elaine
also attended!
We had such a great time and she recieved many nice gifts!

It was so great to travel to Columbia to be with Shannon for
her parties! I arrived on Thursday and she had arranged for me
to have a room at the Hilton Downtown. What a nice treat!
Of course we did some shopping. Almost a natural for mom and daughter!
Ate out at great restaurants and generaly enjoyed ourselves!
Saturday evening my friend Vicki Lewis drove down from North Carolina to join me!
It was so great to see her. I had not seen her in 9 years! We had a lot of catching up
to do. She spent the night with me and met Shannon's friends.
It was also a chance for me to meet her friends who I only had known by name.
All very nice young ladies! Thank you for including me and making me feel welcome!

We are so proud to announce that Shaw n graduated from University of South Carolina on May 9th. We were there to share in their celebration with his family and friends. Best of all he already has a job. Phyiscal Education teacher at an elementary school. Bad news he starts on Tuesday after the wedding!

Amy graduated this past weekend fron SUNY Canton with a Nursing Degree. But she's not done yet! Big future for her. She received the McCallister Award for being the Outstanding Senior Nursing Student! Our extended family is as talented as our own. Love you guys!

Everyone has gone home! We are the only ones still here! They have returned to Maine, Ogdensburg, and Ohio. And you notice the way Dick is looking it is to the North. Happy Anniversary to a wonderful couple. A 60th Anniversary to be exact! Thursday evening we had the special honor of attending a party for Marilyn and Ralph Jewitt from Bucksport Maine. Sixty years! They are such a sweet couple that we have met down here in Daytona! We have known them for only 3 years but they have been an influence to all of us! He was a teacher, Atheletic Director and principal. Marilyn was a stay at home mom who kept it all going. Can you name anyone you know that has been married this long? And by the way they eloped!

On Sunday March 15th the Space Shuttle Discovery Lifted off from Kennedy Space Center. We all went down to the beach to watch. It was a cool very breezy evening with the sun setting. And then the it appeared! What a feeling to see the large glowing figure rise in the sky. We watch for about 10 minutes and then definitely saw the fuel tanks separate from the shuttle. Everyone was clapping and yelling. Old and young truly mesmerized! Another little joy we get to enjoy here in paradise!

To all my friends I apologize for not having any posts the entire month of January. It was definitely a busy month. Three Wright family birthdays: Makayla 6. Nick 30, and Lily 3! They came the week before and Emily had a surprise party for Nick. You have to understand that Nick hasn't been surprised about anything since he was born! She pulled it off and he was truly surprised. We had an early party for Makayla and Lily with Aunt Shannon. Our girls our getting big. The month was taken up by undecorating ( yes I took everything down this year!). Dick and I had dentist, dr. and appointments that needed to be taken care of before we left town. Dick was going to physical therapy for his "tennis elbow" didn't seem to help but low and behold now that he is not at home it feels better! Hum, I wonder why :) Of course I had many meetings for the Auxiliary and the Gift Shop. We all needed to coordinate who was leaving town and who had to cover for who. Many exciting things going on with the shop! New items have been well recieved. We have had 2 over $1000.00 days! Scheduled to get new customer service counters which will provide much needed space!
The photo here is of a beautiful River Walk in Columbia,SC where Shannon and Shawn live. Their place was our first stop south. It was a beautiful Sunday. Shannon and Shawn wanted pictures taken so we drove into the parking lot and headed down to the river. When we returned this is what we found:
We had left the car for less than 45min. Shannon opened the back door and found that they had taken her wallet. I opened mine and they had taken my wallet and my checkbook! The police came and then a detective came who took fingerprints. When he found out that we had a lot of cash, he said he would call some of his "informants". We were able to call the CC people and our bank. Shannon recieved a new license the next day ( I am still waiting for my temporary) and our day was completely ruined.
We did go out to dinner but it was a very invasive day. Don't leave anything in your car that someone could see. The police say it's getting worse and worse.
We are on the beach now. I will have more things to share now. Miss everyone!

He's been with us since our first christmas in this house. 1990. Many may think I'm putting this post up because he may have passed. No fear he is still here. Slower, skinnier, deafer and blinder. He isn't doing well. I have banned him from our bed at night. He was staying in the kitchen but would bark most of the night and we weren't getting any sleep. When the kids were home this past week we brought his bed up to our room and he is now sleeping there.
This picture is of the sweater I bought him because I thought he was cold when he was going outside. He liked it inside but when he went out he stood looking at the door shivering! Too funny!

"We're having Thanksgiving dinner at home again this year. I guess I can't complain. Three turkeys in 28 years of marriage doesn't exactly make me a martyr. The first time I hosted the annual family feeding frenzy was so long ago I can barely recall it now. Except when I hear a smoke alarm; then I recall it clear as a bell.

My family remembers it too it seems, because since then we've had Thanksgiving dinner anywhere but here. However last year things changed. Funny, isn't it? We like to think that family is a constant, a kind of rock that never changes. But even rocks can change, given enough time, enough pressure. Families change too, over time, and under pressure. They recreate themselves every day. A birth, a death, a marriage, a divorce, a move to another city. The changes may be good or bad; makes no difference, really. What matters is what we do with them.

It's good to remember who we were and where we came from. But it's better to know who we are and where we're going. We need to talk less about how things used to be, and more about how they are. We did that last year, my husband and I took a look at our family and decided the traditions that had served us so well for so long no longer seemed to fit. It had been a rugged year, dealing a series of blows that struck us individually and as a family. My mother died. My father-in-law had to be placed in a rest home. And my husband had yet another surgery for cancer, only to be told a few months later that the disease had spread to his liver.

So when it came time to plan Thanksgiving we took a family vote and I lost - 4 to 1 - meaning I had to stay home and cook. It wasn't bad, really. We invited some friends - who are like family - except they help. We all said, "Best Thanksgiving ever." Nobody said, "Best turkey ever," but I take compliments where I can get them. So we're going to do it again this year. We invited the same friends and they accepted. I took that as a compliment, too. And my sister is coming from South Carolina. Her children are all grown and if she stayed home they'd expect her to cook, she said. I'll wait until she gets off the plane to tell her about my plan.

On Thanksgiving day, while she wrestles the turkey, I will set two tables - one in my dining room, the other in my heart. And I will seat, in fact or in spirit, all the people I've known and loved. No, I won't be feeding them all. But I will be thankful for them. It will be the best Thanksgiving ever. Because now is the only time that counts. Who can say what another year will bring? I wish you your best Thanksgiving ever. It's the only one that counts."

I copied this from a daughter-in-law of a dear friend who passed away this year. Certainly a tear jerker but so true! Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Nasty weather and no additional deer were harmed! Did Scott keep camp warm and the beer cold? Don't worry the girls had a wonderful time on their own also! :)

HAYNS Auxilary Conference

Last weekend I was able to attend the New York State HAYNS Auxiliary Conference in Lake George, NY. Eight members of the CHMC Auxiliary made the trip to the beautiful Great Escape Lodge. Seeing that it is just a few miles from Nick and family, I left on Saturday took the girls and mom Emily to the Lodge to enjoy their indoor Water Park. Lily and Makayla spent their nap time with me before we went to dinner with Uncle Awesome (aka Andrew) and Robyn. Makayla spent the night with me and we made our usual breakfast date at Denny's! The rest of the girls came in on Sunday. Seated in front are Diane and Aggie. In back Deb, Me, Patty, Ramona and Marian. We had a wonderful time. Great accommodations, wonderful food and believe it or not good and informative seminars. We went to Sutton's on Monday and then went to the Hospital Gift Shop where we found many treasures. Just a hint always visit your hospitals' gift shop you never know what your going to find! We drove home on Tuesday in the rain. Stopped for a quick lunch and were back to our usual schedules on Wednesday.

Even the Loons enjoy when the river is quieter!

The time has come. Friends have moved south or home to the 'burg or 'motown. It's getting colder at night. Leaves are all nearly off the trees. Hunting season is in full swing. Time to leave my favorite place on earth. Can't really explain why. I'm closer here to my family. Have many wonderful memories of growing up, watching my children grow up and now we watch our grandchildren grow. We won't move back here til next spring. And then it will be the place of a new, happy memory. Our daughters' wedding. What a summer it will be! I better enjoy the winter!

We took all of our 49 employees and their guests along with numerous business partners to Alexandria Bay for a boat cruise amongst the 1000 Islands. As I watched our cruise ship come into dock I was amazed how beautiful the day had turn out! We had been through the end of Hurricane Ike with power outages and then a frost so very early in the season. It was indeed gorgeous. I had time to myself before the "crew" arrived to reflect on what we have accomplished with the business in the four years since my dad died. We had done a boat cruise for our 50th Anniversary and this one was by special request from several employees.
After the boat had docked the Captain went up to hang our "Banner". At that moment I knew dad was looking down and letting me know he was pleased. Pleased with what we have done with the business. The improvements we have made. The memorials we have done in his name and last but not least how our family has grown. Scott and Amy involved so greatly in the business. Nick and Emily and their 3 beautiful girls. Shannon and Shawn now engaged to be married. I know he was with us for Andrews' graduation and watches his youngest grandson who he so wanted to become closer to in Florida but was not meant to be. I think that the greatest compliment anyone ever gives to Dick or I is when they tell us how well we are carrying on his legacy. I shed a little tear when I saw the banner go up.
Dick was the tour guide on the buses that came from the plant. Waited for you Mike but you missed the bus! What a crew. They all came off the bus laughing! We are all truly family. Of course John King was on board! But I did miss his Gilligan's Island rendition he promised!
Our meal was great. It was so nice that we were able to on the outside most of the trip. Thank you to everyone. See you again in 10years!

She Said Yes!

Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Wright proudly announce the engagement of their daughter Shannon E. Wright to Shawn A. Smaciak, son of Mr. Michael C. Smaciak, Ms. Elaine F. Smaciak & Mr. Eugene Miller. Shawn and Shannon are both 2002 graduates of Ogdensburg Free Academy. Shannon obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Canisius College in 2006. She is currently working on her Master's Degree in Human Behavior & Conflict Management at Columbia College. Shawn will recieve a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education from the University of South Carolina in May 2009. The couple resides in Columbia, S.C.. An August 15, 2009 wedding is planned.

I was thinking this morning that I haven't mentioned our middle granddaughter Lily. Her middle name is Anita after my mom and her parents didn't know that my mom's sister was named Lil. She certainly has my aunt's spitfire. She does everything with an attitude! She is beautiful and we know she will give her parents a run for their money!

Bear Hunt Widow!

Well it's another hunting season upon us! Dick left on Sunday with 11 others to Northern Ontario, Canada to do his third bear hunt. He says two of the new guys have gotten bear but he has only seen one very large one! Now this is how is says he say it! It was after dusk (when they come out of the woods) and he was beside the road (where they WAIT for the driver to pick them up, oh by the way they are ALONE the whole time they are at their "bear stand") when he heard a click, click, click and he looked around and saw ( within 10ft) a very large bear staring at him! I said did you shot him. "No, we have to have our guns in their cases when we come out of the woods!" What did you do? I put my flashlight on him and he ran away! Thank god these stories don't bother me any more or I would never sleep when he was gone! The picture is from last years hunt!

Makayla rode back with Aunt Shannon to spend another weekend with us! What a nice surprise! We had a great dinner done by Aunt Amy and after we were done Aunt Shannon and Makayla made S'mores! They were delicius! It was a beautiful night and we all relished the warmth of the setting sun!

Community Service Award

Last night Dick and I were honored by his High School Alma Mater with their Annual Community Service Award. It was a great event! All of the kids including grandkids were home for the dinner. Only Shawn could not be there. The dinner was wonderful, the people included many friends, the door prizes were fun. The only draw back was the lack of AC on one of the hottest days this summer! We shared laughs and stories of years gone by. Rick DeFranco was inducted into the School's Distinguished Alumni Group. Thank you Heuvelton Alumni and to our family for being there!

As many of you know I tried a little kayak lesson with my good friend Diane. I really did enjoy it! Hopefully some time this week I can give it another shot! Unfortunately the day was overcast but it was warm!

Happy 1st Birthday Jenna Teresa Wright! Our grand daughters' birthday is today! What a cutie! When excited she shakes all over! Jenna is the third daughter of our son Nicholas and his wife Emily! She has two sisters Makayla and Lily. We celebrated her birthday when they were home earlier this month!

This being my first post, I will dedicate to my good friend Bob who has inspired me! Don't worry Bob I will be asking for a lot of suggestions! As most of you know our daughter Shannon and her boyfriend Shawn got engaged in July! Their wedding is planned for August 15th, 2009! Today Shannon, her friend Jessica and our daughter in law Amy went to Syracuse looking for Bridesmaids dresses. I looked for a dress but nothing is really attracting me. I have plenty of time and I know I will find the right dress!
